RCYC Burnham Training
The weekend of the 17th & 18th November saw the final
World Team training hosted by The Otters in Burnham. Saturday say 6 of the team
joined by Otter teams Joe Barr & Olivia Lloyd and Jack Shorter & Adam
Lloyd for an intense training session of Adam Bowers' starting & boat
handling drills overseen by Team Coach Matt White. A short break ashore for
lunch was followed in the afternoon by more of the same.
Sunday dawned a beautiful day but with little wind. The
team were joined by Jess D'Arcy who had been otherwise engaged on Saturday. The
light winds provided for some very testing sailing and it was good to see the
level of concentration used by all the team in trying to eak out every ounce of
speed against a strong tide. The morning session was concluded with a team race
which gave the guys a flavour of what to expect in the team race that is
planned at the Championships.
During Lunch the wind continued to drop of and the
decision was taken to finish the weekend early. Whilst we didn't get the wind
that everyone was hoping for it was widely agreed that the weekend had been a
very valuable one from which everyone there benefited.

Dovercourt Bay Training
The World Team asked for big seas and windy training so Matt White (team bosun) arranged just that at Dovercourt Bay!
Saturday morning saw winds gusting 30 knots. With wind against tide the team was able to experience some challenging sailing conditions. While everyone is now sailing in much appreciated borrowed boats some team members were hampered by gear failure early on. World Team Coach Adam Bowers impressed upon the team the importance of checking boat and equipment when we get down under where sailing conditions are likely to put our boats under pressure
Conditions similar to those expected in Hobart enabled Adam to coach the team on working with big waves to maintain speed and performance, learning about 'Torque' along with a session on boat balance
Sunday brought even more wind and even bigger waves so the team had a days classroom training which while important was a bit frustrating for all!
Our thanks go to coach Adam Bowers, Giles White for his time and 'Plastic Chicken' (sic) rib support and for the welcome catering from the team at Shipwreck at Shotley Marina.

Grafham Water Training
Eight of the nine world team boats travelled to Grafham Water for the second of 4 scheduled training weekends. The first of the official World Team Kit arrived in the form of Musto Polo Shirts kindly sponsored by Empowered Systems Limited and the team are pictured above proudly displaying their new Team GBR shirts; a big thank you also to Qube Global Software who have contributed to the cost of the container and shipping.
Saturday morning saw light winds and a morning session devoted to team building, goal setting and electing Helm and Crew Leaders. There followed a late launch and two sessions on the water dedicated to starting, with severe penalties imposed (in pints of beer for the RIB crew!) for those boats not getting over the line within 10 seconds of the start. Sunday morning brought a healthier breeze and an earlier start, with the morning session devoted to mark rounding and the afternoon session a series of short races. As always the team was given the opportunity to view the video playback with World Team Coach Adam Bowers providing his usual entertaining and motivating feedback. At the Sunday de-briefing the team were treated to a video account of Adam’s last trip to Sandy Bay along with a useful insight into the venue and conditions (dolphins included!) After a successful weekend, the team were left fired up and enthusiastic for the next session; they were given clear points on which to focus when practising and encouraged to spend as much time as possible on the water in the meantime.

Au Revoir!
Well... the container filled with 7 Cadets and a RIB is finally packed and left the barn today after a mere 21 hours of magnificent work this weekend led by Matt White and Phil Unwin. The container is on its way to Tilbury in Essex from where it will sail on Friday on its long journey to Hobart, Australia.

World Team Announced
The GBR Cadet World Team was announced at Stone SC on the 23rd September for the final weekend Open Meeting of the year
The team is pictured here in polo shirts displaying the logo of headline sponsors Karcher and about to sail their boats for the last time before loading the container for the 11,000 mile journey to Hobart
The event started with light airs which stayed most of the day. A sea breeze filled in later in the afternoon and the 32 boats entered got in 3 good races. Overnight leaders Alex Warrington and Anna Wootton from Thorpe Bay and Waldringfield were holding off Alex Corby and Robert Keen from Fishers Green and Alton Water. Everyone enjoyed the evening disco and a chance to congratulate the world team.
Day 2 saw the weather change with a steady 23 knots and some big surf to play in. Alex and Robert put in some top class sailing but were being hunted down by fellow Fishers Green pairing of Josie Gummer and Aaron Chadwick. The overall results finished that way with Alex Warrington and Ellie Wootton in 3rd. What a weekend for Alex Corby and Robert Keen who not only won the Open Meeting but took a clean sweep of the Eastern Series Trophy, The Southern Series Trophy and the Ian Craig Trophy!
